Sri Lankan president reaffirms strength of security at Jaffna University

Sri Lankan president Maithripala Sirisena stated that security at Jaffna University would be maintained, as he met with staff and the parents of those involved in a clash between Sinhalese and Tamil students in Colombo on earlier this month.

The President's Media Division said Mr Sirisena had told those present that the Sri Lankan government “is fully responsible for the security and safety of the students”.

Telling the participants that students could “engage in studies without any fear and suspicion as the security and safety of the university has been assured,” Mr Sirisena went on to add,

“The Police and other security sections have been informed to act sensitively towards such incidents”.

Sri Lanka is one of the most dangerous places in the world to be a journalist. Tamil journalists are particularly at threat, with at least 41 media workers known to have been killed by the Sri Lankan state or its paramilitaries during and after the armed conflict.

Despite the risks, our team on the ground remain committed to providing detailed and accurate reporting of developments in the Tamil homeland, across the island and around the world, as well as providing expert analysis and insight from the Tamil point of view
