Sri Lankan president donates Rs.45 million for golden roof of Buddhist vihara

Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena handed over a cheque for Rs. 45 million rupees on Tuesday, to be used towards the renovation of the golden roof of a Buddhist vihara in Kandy.

Mr Sirisena donated the cheque in response to “a request made by the Mahanayake Theros of the Malwathu and Asgiri Chapters” reported the official President’s Media Division.

The cheque was handed over to Kandy District Secretary H.M.P. Hitisekara at the Presidential Secretariat.

The donation comes after Sri Lankan Prime Minister Ranil Wickremeisnghe pledged that his government would bear the costs for the renovation after meeting with monks during a ceremony held in his honour last week.
