Human right for Tamils to mark Maaveerar Naal says Mano Ganeshan

People in the North can mark Maaveerar Naal (Tamil national remembrance day) without mentioning the LTTE, Sri Lanka's minister for national co-existence, dialogue and official languages minister, Mano Ganeshan was quoted by the Daily Mirror as saying this week.
Stating that it was a human right to remember loved ones, Mr Ganeshan pointed out that the JVP also commemorated their heroes.
“They can do so as they are not a proscribed organisation anymore. But People in the North cannot use the name of the LTTE to commemorate their loved ones as it is a proscribed organisation,” he told the Daily Mirror.

We need your support

Sri Lanka is one of the most dangerous places in the world to be a journalist. Tamil journalists are particularly at threat, with at least 41 media workers known to have been killed by the Sri Lankan state or its paramilitaries during and after the armed conflict.

Despite the risks, our team on the ground remain committed to providing detailed and accurate reporting of developments in the Tamil homeland, across the island and around the world, as well as providing expert analysis and insight from the Tamil point of view

We need your support in keeping our journalism going. Support our work today.
