Black Tigers Day marked by Tamils in North-East

Tamils in the North-East marked Karumpuli Naal in a series of events today, commemorating the men and women of the LTTE’s Black Tigers.

Locals gathered at a Thuyilum Ilam in Maavadi in Batticaloa today, where a memorial that was destroyed by the Sri Lankan military was cleaned and a lamp lit to mark the lives that were sacrificed.

Flowers were laid and lamps were also lit before a drawing of Captain Miller in Nelliyadi, where he successfully completed the first ever Black Tiger mission in 1987.

An event was also held in Kilinochchi at Arivaham, the TNA headquarters, where the tributary flame was lit by the brother of Karumpuli Major Nanthan, who sacrificed his life during the Second Battle of Elephant Pass, in which the LTTE was victorious.

Karumpuli Naal was observed widely in the North-East until 2009, where thousands of Tamils turned out to show their respect.
