Tamils in Point Pedro demand removal of Sri Lankan military camps

Protest at Point Pedro

Tamil residents protested in Point Pedro, Jaffna on Monday to demand the removal of Sri Lankan military camps in the area as the Tamil homeland remains occupied.

Local politicians, civil society activists and trade unionists demonstrated through Point Pedro calling for the removal of a military camp which currently occupies Point Pedro Magistrate’s Court and a building belonging to the Post Office in the harbour area.

As a result, the Post Office has been forced to operate from another building, while efforts are underway to relocate the Point Pedro court complex outside the town.

Protest across north east

The protest started from Point Pedro harbour and proceeded to the Point Pedro Divisional Secretariat, where a petition was submitted.

Organised collectively by traders and the general public, the agitation drew the participation of politicians, civil society organisations, and local residents.

Thus, the protest was advanced with the demand that the key civic landmarks of Point Pedro—its court, post office, and lighthouse—be preserved at their rightful sites, and that the Sri Lankan military and naval camps occupying these public spaces be removed.
