A protest led by Tamil women took place today near the iconic Nallur Kandaswamy Temple in Jaffna, bringing together a multi-generational gathering to demand justice, protection and liberation.
Organised by the Eelam Tamil Women and Children’s Rights Protection and Development Organization, the demonstration was held under the call to action, “Let us raise our voices for the rights and protection of women.” Tamil women of all ages stood side by side, holding placards and voicing their demands.
Among the messages displayed, one placard captured the central demand of the protest: “Our women and our land need liberation.”
Other placards called on the international community to intervene, urging an immediate end to military occupation and demanding accountability through an international investigation into genocide.
Protesters also highlighted the continued vulnerabilities faced by Tamil women, including threats to their safety, dignity and livelihoods, following a spate of violent incidents against women in the North-East.
The demonstration reflects ongoing frustrations among Tamils in the North-East, where many argue that despite the end of the armed conflict, militarisation and state control over land and civilian life persist.
