A woman has been rescued alive from a well in Kokkatticholai, Batticaloa, while the decomposed body of another woman was recovered from the same location, prompting an ongoing investigation by Sri Lankan police.

The discovery was made in the Nellikadu area, within the Kokkatticholai Police Division, where search operations were carried out after authorities obtained a court order to drain water from the well. The operation was conducted with the assistance of the Manmunai South-West Pradeshiya Sabha and in the presence of Sri Lankan security personnel.

According to reports, one woman was found alive inside the well, while the remains of another woman were retrieved in a severely decomposed state. The incident is believed to have taken place in a paddy field area in Nellikadu.

Authorities launched the search following suspicions that additional bodies may have been present in the well. However, Sri Lankan police later confirmed that no further bodies were recovered during the operation.

Investigations are currently being carried out jointly by the Kokkatticholai, Vavunatheevu and Vellaveli Police Stations, with special police teams deployed to probe the circumstances surrounding the incident.

It has been reported that the woman rescued from the well had been missing since the previous day from Kothiyapulai. The discovery of the decomposed body at the same location has since raised further concerns and drawn significant attention across the district.

Sri Lankan police have stated that formal confirmation will depend on the findings of a post-mortem examination with investigations ongoing.
