TNPF campaigner detained by Sri Lankan police

A campaigner with the Tamil National People's Front (TNPF) was detained by the Sri Lankan police in Poonahari on Thursday.

The detained campaigner was falsely accused of distributing election leaflets after 11pm in the Kilinochchi district, said the party's media spokesperson and Jaffna district candidate, V Manivannan. The detained campaigner has been since released on bail.

Another campaigner was also detained by police in the Neeraaviyadi region of Jaffna district and interrogated for a number of hours with no explanation as to the detention.

The Sri Lankan government is systematically targetting the TNPF campaign, Mr Manivannan said, with campaigners being arrested, detained, threatened and by the Sri Lankan police with false accusations.
