• Over 30,000 acres under military and state occupation in Mannar

    A total of 32,855 acres of land in Mannar is occupied by either security forces or government agencies, according to statistics published by the Mannar District Secretariat.

    Publishing in response to a Right to Information (RTI) request, the secretariat said 2,271 acres of state land and 312 acres of private land was occupied by the Sri Lankan army and navy.

  • Senior Sri Lankan navy officer arrested over murder of Tamils

    A senior Sri Lankan navy officer has been arrested and charged with the murder of two Tamil businessmen, after they were abducted by the military in January 2009.

    The two Tamils were reportedly kidnapped by the navy and taken to the Welisara navy camp, a police official told AFP. They were abducted allegedly under the pretext that the vehicle they were travelling in was carrying an explosive.

    Shortly before he announced the formation of a new political part, the retired Supreme Court judge said that the Sri Lankan government had failed to uphold its pledge to devolve power to the North-East.

  • STF arrests four Tamil youths in Jaffna

    Sri Lanka’s Special Task Force (STF) troops arrested four Tamil youths in Jaffna on Monday.

    Three of the youths from Kokkuvil and Mallakam were accused of smoking cannabis.

    The STF said that the fourth, arrested separately, was involved in a recent sword attack at Uppumada Junction in Kondavil.

    All four were handed over to Jaffna police.

    The Hindu has hit back at the Sri Lankan president’s denial of reports that he told cabinet ministers that Indian intelligence services were involved in a plot to assassinate him, stating that their report had been cross-verified.

    The Hindu’s Readers’ Editor said their reporter in Colombo had “directly cross-verified the information with two Ministers who were present at the Cabinet meeting in which the President made this incredible statement”.

The harassment of the journalist recalls the worst period of persecution of Tamil journalists in Sri Lanka, the press freedom organisation said.

  • New US Ambassador to Sri Lanka sworn in

    The incoming US Ambassador to Sri Lanka and the Maldives, Alaina Teplitz was sworn in on Monday.

    Earlier this year Teplitz told the US Senate Committee on Foreign Relations that the Tamil community remained concerned about Sri Lanka's lack of progress towards reconciliation, accountability and justice.

  • Sri Lankan police arrest Sinhalese man in Kilinochchi over drug charges

    A Sinhalese man from Anuradhapura has been arrested in Kilinochchi on charges of drug smuggling this week.

    The man was reportedly caught with at least 4kg of cannabis.

    It is not yet known where the man was travelling to.

  • NPC visits villagers blocked from returning to their land by forestry department

    A delegation from the Northern Provincial Council (NPC) visited villagers in Vavuniya last week, where Tamils have been blocked from returning to their land by Sri Lanka’s forestry department.

    Twelve members of the NPC met with residents from Navalarpannai and Kanchuramoddai, where they have been unable to resettle in their land.

  • TID questions Hindu extremist leader Sachithananthan

    Sri Lanka’s Terrorist Investigation Division (TID) called in the leader of the Hindu extremist organisation Siva Senai, M K Sachithananthan earlier this month.

    Sachithananthan was summoned to the TID office in Colombo on October 5, but claimed he could not travel to the south due to ill health. He was subsequently questioned at the TID office on 4th Cross Road in Jaffna on October 11.
