    The best way the Sri Lankan government can pay tribute to the Tamil youth that took his own life calling for the release of political prisoners would be to respect his genuine feelings, the Chief Minister of the Northern Province has said.

  • Reducing size of military presence in North-East Sri Lanka key pressing issue says US Ambassador
    The need to reduce the size of the military presence in the North-East was a key issue flagged in the North said the US Ambassador to the UN whilst speaking on her visit to the North-East of Sri Lanka.

    Speaking to ft.lk in an interview, Ms Power said that key issues demilitarisation, land grabs and accountability had been flagged as being still unaddressed by Sri Lanka’s government.

    “The issue of demilitarisation. The recognition that the size of the military presence had become somewhat smaller, but that it needed to still come way down. There was an expression of the sense of urgency about the size of the military presence coming down.

    Two, and very related, giving the land back to the people who had lived on it for many years and related issues, but I met not only the local officials but also individuals who were heading households who didn’t have access to their land and were desperate to get it back. In one case, the woman who was summoned by the military 34 times because there was a structure there that the military wanted to destroy. So they wouldn’t let her live in the land but they were not moving quickly to destroy the structure, so she kept getting displaced from her land and kept having to go back.
  • Sri Lanka businesses must lobby for improved human rights to see GSP+ reinstated says EU ambassador
    The European Union Ambassador to Sri Lanka David Daly said that the reinstatement of the GSP+ benefits were further away than the government claims in a meeting this week.

    Commenting on a disparity discussions issues tabled by Sri Lanka and EU on reinstatement of the GSP+, Mr Davy said,

    “What they have in mind are discussions on T-shirts and other export products. However, my idea of discussions on GDP+ is about torture, freedom of media, the Prevention of Terrorism Act, the environment and other issues that flow from the 27 conventions.”

    Stressing that the GSP+ wouldn’t be reinstated purely becomes of the election of a new government in Sri Lanka, Mr Daly added,

    ““Measures taken under the GSP Plus must be taken for objective reasons, and not just because we want to help the country because of this government over that. That is not a justification of GSP+.”
  • Maaveerar Naal commemorated in Jaffna

    Maaveerar Naal in Nallur

    Commemorative flames and candles have been lit to commemorate Maaveerar Naal, the Tamil national remembrance day, in Jaffna.

    Members of the Northern Provincial Council, led by Councillor Shivajilingam, gathered at Nallur temple and Gurunagar's St Mary's church to light candles in remembrance of Tamil national liberation fighters who lost their lives in the armed conflict with the Sri Lankan state.

  • 27 Tamils arrested overnight in Jaffna

    At least 27 Tamils were arrested overnight in the run-up to Maaveerar Naal, in the Chunnakam police district, in Jaffna.

    Local sources told the Tamil Guardian that they were arrested on suspicion of being involved in Maaveerar Naal events.

    However Chunnakam police said they were detained for "acting suspiciously" at night.

  • Trees planted in remembrance of Maaveerar Naal

    Tamils in the North-East participated in an event planting trees, commemorating Maaveerar Naal, the Tamil remembrance day.

    The event, attended by local Tamils in and around Iththavil, near Palai, was organised by the Northern Provincial Council, with several officials, including Agricultural Minister Ayngaranesan, present.

    The University of Jaffna commemorated Maaveerar Naal at an event on the campus at noon today.

  • Vavuniya Citizens Committee calls for remembrance lamps to be lit at 18:05
    Vavuniya Citizens Committee on Friday called on people to mark Tamil National Remembrance day, or Maaveerar Naal, by lighting ghee lamps in memory of those who gave their lives to the Tamil nation's struggle against oppression.

    Marking the moment when the first LTTE cadre Lt Shankar, died in the struggle, at 18:05 on November 27th, 1982, the Vavuniya Citizens Committee urged people to light their lamps at 18:05 today.

  • Chennai High Court allows Maaveerar Naal commemorations

    The Madras High Court on Thursday gave permission for two organisations to hold events commemorating Maaveerar Naal, the Eelam Tamil national day of remembrance. The events are due to go ahead today in Kolathur in Salem district and at Palanisamy grounds in Alamoor.

    Justice M.M. Sundresh allowed two different pleas filed by C Ramamurthy, town secretary of the Dravidar Viduthalai Kazhagam and by P Bharathi of Sethiathope in Cuddalore district, a functionary of Naam Thamizhar Katchi, requesting police to permit the meetings, the
    PTI reported.

    The judge ordered the respective police authorities to allow the Maaveerar Naal events.

    Mr Ramamurthy submitted that he had been conducting the meeting for the past 10 years, but when he applied for permission earlier this month, police refused.

  • ‘No threat to national security’ by releasing Tamil political prisoners assures Sri Lanka’s justice minister

    Sri Lanka’s justice minister Wijeyadas Rajapakshe assured the Sri Lankan public that there would be no threat to “national security” if the government were to release Tamil political prisoners, in comments to the media on Thursday.

    Speaking in Sinhala at a special press conference held at the Parliament complex, the minister pointed to previous release by the Sri Lankan government under Mahinda Rajapaksa as examples of the safe release of those held under the Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA).

    However, he stressed that those who were convicted under the much criticised PTA would not be released.

  • Sri Lankan navy attacks creating ‘fear and unrest’ says Tamil Nadu Chief Minister

    Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa said the continued attacks by the Sri Lankan navy on Indian fishermen are “creating a sense of fear and unrest among the fisherfolk in Tamil Nadu,” after further arrests by the Sri Lankan military on Thursday.

    A group of 15 fishermen from Tamil Nadu were arrested by the Sri Lankan navy whilst fishing in the Palk Straits in separate incidents on Thursday.

    Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa wrote to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, stating it was “imperative that the issue of the release of these boats is taken up with the highest levels of the Sri Lankan administration and the immediate release of these boats is ensured.”

  • Schoolboy's heartbreaking suicide must open eyes - Tamil political prisoners

    Tamil political prisoners have expressed their heartbreak at the suicide of 18 year old Rajeswaran Senthuran, who took his own life in protest at their prolonged detention.

    In a statement, the prisoners requested that no more supporters should resort to such tragic measures.

    The schoolboys death should resound loudly for the oppressive Sri Lankan government, they said.

  • Hundreds attend last rites for Senthuran

    The funeral of Rajeswaran Senthuran, the 18-year-old schoolboy who committed suicide in protest at the ongoing detention of Tamil political prisoners, was held today in Koppay.


    After religious rites at Senthuran's home, his body was laid at the private tuition centre where he had studied, allowing hundreds of attendees to pay their respects.

  • Canadian Tamil youth commemorate Maaveerar Naal

     

    On November 25th the Tamil Youth Organization (TYO) Canada, in partnership with the Tamil Students' Associations (TSAs) from several universities, held a “Commencement of Tamil Eelam Remembrance week” event in Scarborough to mark Maaveerar Naal.

    Dances and songs were performed, speeches and poems were read out and flowers were laid in tribute to the thousands who have died in the Tamil struggle.
    Throughout November, several of the Canadian Tamil Students' Associations also held campus-based events marking Maaveerar Naal.
