A senior Canadian police chief sparked controversy with a visit to Sri Lanka last month, where he discussed “cooperation” with its notorious police force and visited the office of a senior official who the Supreme Court found had personally participated in torture.

S. Jenita, the head of the Vavuniya of Families of the Disappeared, who was arrested by the Sri Lankan police as she attempted to stage a protest last week, has finally been released on bail.

Sri Lankan troops with the army and police conducted a raid at the Jaffna Central Bus Station, as part of the much criticised “Operation Yukthiya” (meaning “justice” in Sinhala). The raid caused inconveniences to hundreds of daily commuters as passengers in buses were extensively checked, impacting the normal flow of public transportation.

The 39th anniversary commemoration of Sinnathurai Raveenthiran, popularly known as Captain Pandithar, a prominent commander in the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), took place at his residence in Valvettithurai, Jaffna on Tuesday.

British parliamentarian Siobhain McDonagh called on her government to condemn the arrest of Sivananthan Jenitta, the head of the families of the disappeared association in Vavuniya who was detained by Sri Lankan police as she protested last week.

Writing to foreign secretary David Cameron earlier today, McDonagh urged the government to “take immediate steps to express the UK's condemnation of this arrest and to take action against police officers who attacked the peaceful protesters as well as to demand a fair trial”.

A commemoration was held in Trincomalee last week, to mark 18 years since five Tamil students were summarily executed by Sri Lanka's Special Task Force, whilst they spent an afternoon on the beach.

The ceremony was held in the evening by the statue of Mahatma Gandhi on Trincomalee’s Dutch Bay beachfront – the same time and place where the five students were murdered.

In a display of solidarity, a mass protest took place in Mullaitivu on Monday, echoing demands for the immediate release of Jenita, the head of the Vavuniya chapter of the Families of the Disappeared, after she was arrested by Sri Lankan police last week.

The British royal family undertook its first visit to the Tamil homeland earlier today, as Princess Anne visited the Jaffna Public Library, an iconic centre of Tamil literature that was set ablaze by Sri Lankan security forces and state-sponsored mobs in 1981.
