Officials of the Valikamam Southwest and North Divisional Councils lit lamps and held memorial observances in a tribute to fallen Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) fighters this week, as Tamils across the North-East prepare to mark Maaveerar Naal – or Great Heroes’ Day.
In Manipay, red and yellow Tamil Eelam flags were hoisted across the town area as commemorations began early on Friday morning. A special enclosure had been prepared in front of the Divisional Council, where councillors gathered to light the first lamps of remembrance, marking the start of the week-long tributes across the Tamil homeland.
Carrying lamps, council members then entered the council chamber, where they conducted a further memorial observance honouring the fallen fighters of the Tamil nation. The ceremony formed part of a series of events taking place throughout Jaffna.

Last week, Valikamam North Pradeshiya Sabha commenced under the leadership of its Chairman, Somasundaram Sugirthan, with a tribute to the Maaveerar – or Great Heroes.
Members from across party lines came together to pay their respects before a portrait of a kartigai poo – or gloriosa lily flower.
Maaveerar Naal is on 27 November, and is marked annually by Eelam Tamils worldwide to honour the tens of thousands of cadres who died in the liberation struggle.
