Preparations have begun in Mannar for Maaveerar Naal (Great Heroes Day), as Tamils across the North-East get ready to honour those who sacrificed their lives in the Tamil struggle for liberation on 27 November.
At the Pandivirichchan Maaveerar Thuyilum Illam (resting place) in Mannar, families of fallen fighters, former combatants, and members of the local memorial committee have commenced voluntary work to clean and organise the site ahead of this year’s commemorations.
The day’s activities began with floral tributes to the Maaveerar, followed by cleaning of the cemetery, marking the beginning of this year’s remembrance preparations. Parents of the fallen and community members joined hands in restoring the cemetery grounds and arranging for upcoming ceremonies.

The Pandivirichchan resting place, one of several cemeteries destroyed by the Sri Lankan military after the end of the armed conflict in 2009, has been partially restored in recent years through community effort. Despite ongoing military surveillance and intimidation, local Tamils have continued to rebuild and commemorate at these sites, preserving the collective memory of their struggle.
Maaveerar Naal, observed annually on 27 November, remains one of the most significant dates in the Tamil national calendar. It marks the death of Lt. Shankar, the first fighter of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) to fall in battle in 1982, and is commemorated by Tamils across the homeland and diaspora as a day of remembrance and resistance.
Across the North-East, preparations are taking place at thuyilum illams in Kilinochchi, Mullaitivu, Jaffna, and Batticaloa, where volunteers have been are organising in anticipation of this year’s commemorations.
