A case is set to be filed against Sri Lankan authorities over the poor reconstruction of the Maruthankerny-Paruthithurai Road in the Northern Province, despite over Rs. 80.2 million being allocated on a one-kilometre section of the project.

The Northern Province Land Rights Group leader, Muralitharan, announced the decision on February 6, citing alleged mismanagement and inaction over the deteriorating condition of the 16-kilometer route.

Speaking to journalists at his residence, Muralitharan stated, “the road, which runs from Maruthankerny to Amban, is in a dilapidated condition and unfit for travel”.

Despite continuous requests for repairs to support medical and commercial needs and even reports of funds being allocated for the work, the road remains in a state of disrepair.

Local health officials have also raised concerns about the impact on emergency medical services. The in-charge of the Maruthankerny Divisional Hospital stated that there is great difficulty in transporting patients.

Authorities have also allegedly failed to act despite multiple written complaints. Muralitharan added:

"Even after sending several letters, no action has been taken. It is becoming increasingly difficult to operate under these conditions."

The initial construction project was implemented during the good governance period of former Sri Lankan president Maithripala Sirisena’s, administration. However, it is now evident that these efforts were substandard, leaving the road in a severe state of disrepair. As a result, Tamils in the Northern Province continue to struggle with access to basic necessities due to inadequate infrastructure.

Muralitharan stated that unless the road is properly rebuilt, a public interest case will be filed against the responsible parties, including the Vadamarachchi East Divisional Secretariat and the Pradeshiya Sabha members.
