Jamat-e-Islami to face charges of genocide in Bangladeshi tribunal

Leaders of the Jamaat-e-Islami party, are to face charges of crimes against humanity and genocide for their conduct during the war that led to the independence of Bangladesh.

The coordinator of the Investigating Agency of the country’s International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) outlined today that seven charges including genocide and crimes against humanity would be pressed against the party and its affiliates.

US planes to hunt Kony

The United States will deploy military aircraft and more of special forces to hunt down Ugandan rebel leader Joseph Kony, wanted by the International Criminal Court for war crimes.

The US had already deployed 100 troops to help African troops to find him, and will now send another 150 Air Force special forces.

Kony’s Lord’s Resistance Army is accused of committing horrific crimes, and African Union troops are tracking down his forces in the border region of Uganda, South Sudan, DR Congo and the Central African Republic.

Botswana and 56 other HRC member states urge end to reprisals against civil society

The Botswana ambassador to the UN in Geneva, Mothusi Bruce Rabasha Palai, has expressed concerns about increasing reports of reprisals against civil society activists, who are engaged with international human rights organisations.

Palai called on members to commit to an end to reprisals and contribute to a better response by the UN.

The statement, supported by 56 other member states of the UN Human Rights Council, comes in the wake of Sri Lanka’s recent crackdown on human rights activists, who sought to highlight disappearances and other abuses on the island, as the Council deliberates a resolution on Sri Lanka.

Russia stripped of G8 summit

The G8 summit will not be held in Russia this year, said the British Premier, David Cameron  during his visit to the Netherlands today.

Urging Russia to respond to recent sanctions and change its course Cameron said,

“We should be clear there’s not going to be a G8 summit in Russia”

Morsi supporters sentenced to death in Egypt

Over 500 alleged supporters of the ousted former President Morsi, were issued death sentences by an Egyptian court today.

Commenting on the court’s decision, a Cairo based lawyer in favour of the proceedings, Gamil Dorgham, said,

“The decision is not a final one, but if it were final, it’s all right. You have to know we are fighting terrorism. We have to deter them.”

US urged to protect Rohingya community from genocide in Myanmar

A former U.S congressman and current president of the US based ‘United to End Genocide’ activist group, Tom Andrews, outlined today that, “the building blocks of genocide” were evident during his month long visit to Burma this year.

Andrews warned that the Rohingya Muslims faced life-threatening deprivation whilst living in a state of fear under the current government and urged the US government to use their leverage with the Myanmar government to protect the Rohingya community.

Russian troops storm Ukrainian airbase in Crimea

Russian troops stormed an airbase in Crimea today, injuring one soldier.

Earlier today, hundreds of unarmed pro-Russian Crimean protestors stormed a Ukrainian naval base in the western region of Crimea.

Russia’s latest assault on Ukrainian facilities comes despite extended sanctions placed on President Putin’s close circle by the US and the EU.

Beirut hit by clashes over Syria

Pro- and anti-Assad groups have clashed in Beirut, after a week of factional violence, which hit the coastal town of Tripoli, which left 25 dead.

Tensions between supporters of the Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and those who support the Syrian rebels have exacerbated in recent months.

Venezuelan protesters killed by security forces

Three Venezuelans were killed during protests against president Maduro today, after military troops clashed with protestors were demonstrating near a barricade.

The protests, which were started by University students in February over the imprisonment of the opposition leader, have resulted in the deaths of 34 people.

EU extends targeted sanctions against Russia

The European Union has extended targeted sanctions against Russia over the crisis in Crimea, to 12 more individuals.

The latest announcement comes just hours after the US announced similar measures against 11 individuals believed to be in President Putin's inner circle.
