Sri Lanka's Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) Jagath Jayasuriya has warned of certain elements, including of course 'the LTTE rump', attempting to discredit Sri Lanka in the run up to CHOGM.

Jayasuriya stressed the importance of ensuring that the upcoming visit by Navi Pillay, the next UN Human Rights Council session and the Northern Provincial Council polls all pass incident-free.

The CDS alleged that opposition elements were exploiting social, political and economic situations, including the Weliweriya shootings, to tarnish the state's image and engineer a regime change, and said:

Rating agency Fitch has said that Sri Lanka is showing strength in economic growth, however Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) remains modest compared with rated peers, leading to rising external indebtedness.

The US embassy in Sri Lanka has provided Sri Lanka’s Department of Archaeology with a $40,120 grant for the “conservation of archaeological materials”.
