Former LTTE intelligence chief sentenced to life imprisonment

A former Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) intelligence chief, Thangavelu Nimalan has been sentenced to life imprisonment for allegedly possessing 2 kilograms of high explosives. 

Colombo High Court delivered the sentence on Friday after a case was filed against Nimalan in 2011.  

A number of other cases have also been filed against Nimalan, including an alleged claymore attack on a Sri Lanka Special Task Force (STF) truck on May 28, 2007 in Ratmalana.

These allegations remain under investigation. 

 

Address the legitimate aspirations of the Tamil community' - India tells Sri Lanka to implement the 13th Amendment

India told Sri Lanka to "take the necessary steps to address the legitimate aspirations of the Tamil community" during the UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC) session yesterday as member states reacted to the UN High Commissioner's latest report.

"India believes that it is in Sri Lanka’s own interest that the expectations of Tamils in Sri Lanka for equality, justice, peace and dignity, within a united Sri Lanka, are fulfilled," Mani Pandey, India's Ambassador told the Council.

Singapore's top court hears final appeal on planned execution of disabled Malaysian Tamil

Earlier this week, Singapore's top court heard the final appeal by Nagaenthran K Dharmalingam, an intellectually disabled Malaysian Tamil man who has been sitting on death row since 2010.

Dharmalingam was convicted on charges of carrying a meagre 42.72 grams of heroin into Singapore, a country that has received widespread criticism over its harsh drug laws. 

UN High Commissioner calls on international community to 'pursue alternate strategies to advance accountability' for human rights abuses in Sri Lanka

UN High Commissioner, Michelle Bachelet called on member states to "pursue alternate strategies to advance accountability at the international level" as successive Sri Lankan governments have demonstrated their "unwillingness to pursue accountability." 

Protests against power outages in Jaffna and Mullaitivu 

Residents of Jaffna gathered in the Jaffna-Kandy highway earlier this week carrying torch and candle lights, expressing their opposition to recurrent power outages in their district.

Sri Lanka ends COVID burial policy, almost 2 years into pandemic

After almost two years of the coronavirus pandemic and amidst widespread protests, the Sri Lankan government announced it would end the widely condemned practice of requiring Muslim Covid-19 victims to be buried at a government-designated site in the North-East this week

In a special announcement from Sri Lanka’s ministry of health, the government said that “dead bodies can be disposed of adhering to normal procedure adopted before the COVID-19 pandemic”.
