US warns ‘world is watching’ as ambassador meets Sri Lanka’s president

The US Ambassador to Sri Lanka met with newly appointed president Ranil Wickremesinghe to express her “grave concern over the unnecessary and deeply troubling escalation of violence”, after an early morning raid on a protest site in the capital injured scores of demonstrators.

Julie Chung tweeted “this is not the time to crack down on citizens, but instead to look ahead at the immediate and tangible steps the Government can take to regain the trust of the people, restore stability, and rebuild the economy”.

Perarivalan’s mother celebrated in Tamil Nadu

Arputham Ammal, the mother of A.G. Periarivalan, who was imprisoned for over 31 years over his alleged role in the 1991 Rajiv Gandhi assassination, was celebrated at a function in Tamil Nadu earlier this month, where she was praised for her resilience.

Periarivalan was finally freed from prison earlier this year, following a long legal battle led chiefly by Arputham Ammal.

Wickremesinghe’s first visit as president is to accused war criminal ‘friends’

Sri Lanka’s president Ranil Wickremesinghe paid a visit to the Defence Headquarters Complex hours after he was sworn in this morning, where he shook hands with accused war criminals and ceremonially lit a lamp before a statue of the Buddha.

Wickremesinghe was greeted by Kamal Gunaratne, Sri Lanka’s defence secretary and former army commander who was involved in overseeing the Mullivaikkal genocide.

Within hours of being appointed Sri Lanka’s new president, Ranil Wickremesinghe issued a stark warning to the island’s protestors, as government supporters reportedly attacked a demonstration site and a court blocked protests at another major site in the Southern capital.

“We will deal with them firmly according to the law,” he warned. “We will not allow a minority of protesters to suppress the aspirations of the silent majority clamouring for a change in the political system.”
