
The White House has announced the nomination of Eric Meyer, a veteran American diplomat and current Senior Bureau Official for the Bureau of South and Central Asian Affairs, to serve as the next United States Ambassador to Sri Lanka.
The nomination, submitted by US President Donald Trump, is now awaiting confirmation by the US Senate.
If confirmed, Meyer will take up the role of Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka. A career member of the Senior Foreign Service, Meyer currently oversees US policy coordination across South and Central Asia, including countries such as Afghanistan, India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka. His career has included a range of senior diplomatic roles both in Washington and abroad.
He most recently served as Chargé d’Affaires, a.i. at the US Mission to Norway and earlier held the same position in North Macedonia, where he also acted as Deputy Chief of Mission. He has also served as the US Consul General in Almaty, Kazakhstan, overseeing interagency operations and representing American interests in the region.
Meyer’s Washington experience includes serving as Special Assistant and Senior Advisor in the Bureau of South and Central Asian Affairs, coordinating policy initiatives across the region. He previously worked as an advisor in the Bureau of Oceans and International Environmental and Scientific Affairs during the US Chairmanship of the Arctic Council.
Internationally, Meyer has held posts in Cambodia, Finland, Argentina, and Egypt, bringing a breadth of regional knowledge and diplomatic acumen. While serving as Consul in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, he frequently stepped in as Acting Deputy Chief of Mission. In Helsinki, he also served on the board of the Fulbright Commission.
Meyer holds a Political Science degree from the University of California, Berkeley, and an MBA from Georgetown University. Before joining the State Department, he worked in corporate sales and government relations within the airline industry. He has received multiple Superior and Meritorious Honor Awards from the US Department of State.
