Sri Lanka unveils South Asia's tallest Buddha statue

The Sri Lankan president, Maithripala Sirisena on Saturday unveiled the tallest Buddha statue in South Asia, in the Kalutara district of the Western province.

Speaking at the opening of the 135 feet statue, Mr Sirisena said, "Buddhist philosophy has been instrumental in molding a righteous society in the country and a moral society could be built based on the Buddhist philosophy."

Hand grenade found in Vavuniya say Sri Lankan intelligence

Sri Lankan intelligence and Special Task Force (STF) officers said they had found an unexploded hand grenade in Vavuniya.

The device was allegedly found together with the national identity card of a politician inside a small bag, in a drain by a goods shed.

The Daily Mirror reported the politician had denied any involvement in the incident and stated it could have been a plot to frame him.

Sri Lanka's accountability process remains shrouded in secrecy warns HRW

Sri Lanka’s process of implementing the UN Human Rights Council resolution on accountability and reconciliation “remains shrouded in secrecy” writes Human Rights Watch Director Brad Adams.

Adding that Sri Lanka’s process had kept international organisations out of the loop, he said,

“Even some international bodies that are supposed to be engaging with the working group say that they do not have the most basic information about its structure. The same is true for other developments related to the UN resolution.”

Stressing the need for clarity of Sri Lanka’s process in advance of the upcoming session of the United Nations Human Rights Council, Mr Adams said,

Retired military personnel will receive government contracts

Retired military personnel from Sri Lanka’s armed forces are to be hired to various roles in the government and semi-government sector due to a shortage of suitable candidates, stated Sri Lanka Defence Secretary.

“As a solution to the lack of technically and professionally skilled persons in the government field the Ministry of Defence has decided to launch this project on the advice of President Sirisena,” said Karunasena Hettiarachchi.

Thousands of Tamil children in Kilinochchi left without parents

Over 4,000 Tamil children have lost one or both parents in the Kilinochchi district alone, according to statistics released by the Sri Lankan government’s District Secretariat.

According to the statistics 3,044 children have lost their father, whilst 764 have lost their mother. 476 children have lost both parents.

The statistics were compiled from across the region, including Karaichchi, Kandavalai, Pachchilaipalli and Poonakari.

 

Sri Lanka took 'immediate measures' to revoke EU ban says foreign minister

Sri Lanka’s Foreign Minister Mangala Samaraweera welcomed a decision by the European Union to lift a ban on fishing exports from the island, stating that his government had taken “immediate measures” to revoke the ban since coming into power.

"The lifting of the red card will allow Sri Lanka to resume fish exports to the EU's 28 member countries,” said Mr Samaraweera, noting that EU markets “accounted for 68 percent of Sri Lanka's fish exports, amounting to 108 million dollars”.

Swedish foreign minister to visit Jaffna

Sweden’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Margot Wallström will pay an official visit to Jaffna this weekend.

Ms Wallström will meet with Northern Province Chief Minister C V Wigneswaran as well as civil society activists. She will also visit an IDP camp housing displaced Tamils from across the North-East.

During her visit the foreign minister will also meet with Sri Lanka’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Mangala Samaraweera, with the two due to hold a joint press conference on April 25, as well as Sri Lanka’s president and prime minister.

Former Tamil cadre arrested by Sri Lanka's TID

A former Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam cadre was arrested by Sri Lanka’s infamous Terrorist Investigation Department.

Locals that witnessed the arrest said he was taken to a Terrorism Prevention camp in Vavuniya.

The TID is widely known for its documented routine torture of detainees in Sri Lanka.

The Cadre, Damotharan Jayakanth, was arrested under the pretence of not having undergone Sri Lanka’s rehabilitation programme.

Numerous reports of torture in Sri Lanka’s rehabilitation centres have emerged since the end of armed conflict between Sri Lanka’s government and the LTTE.

TNA reaffirms recognition of Muslim nation in Sri Lanka

The Tamil National Alliance (TNA) assured the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (LSMC) that the Tamils see Muslims as a distinct nation in habiting Sri Lanka, reports Adaderana.

The statement by Tamil National Alliance MP MA Sumanthiran, said that the Illankai Tamil Arasu Katchi (ITAK) had always referred to the Muslims as a nation in all its documents, adding that the “Tamils had endorsed this in every election.”

NPC passes bill calling for merged federal North-East

The Northern Provincial Council (NPC) passed a bill on Saturday calling for Sri Lanka's new constitution to include the merger of the North-East into one federal, Tamil speaking unit.

The bill was tabled by the NPC's chief minister, C V Wigneswaran and passed by a majority vote.
