Sri Lankan troops serving as United Nations peacekeepers in the Central African Republic received medals in a ceremony to mark their contribution this week.
The 3rd contingent of Sri Lanka Air Force Aviation Unit is part of the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in the Central African Republic (MINUSCA).

Sinhala Kandyan dancers were present at the ceremony, which took place before a makeshift Sigiriya rock, adding “more glamour to the event, replete with traditional and cultural drums and dance items as well as an eye-catching drill display,” according to an official military website.

Sri Lankan troops have been implicated in the rape of Haitian minors and running child sex rings whilst serving as UN Peace Keeping forces in Haiti. In 2007 a group of Haitian children identified 134 peacekeepers from Sri Lanka in a child sex ring that lasted several years. Though repatriated none of the implicated soldiers were prosecuted in Sri Lanka.
