The UN is to ensure soldiers from Sri Lanka are vetted prior to joining the UN Peacekeeping force.
Spekaing at a press briefing in New York, the deputy spokesperson for the UN Secretary-General was quoted by the Daily Mirror as saying, “wherever we recruit soldiers from, in every country, we try to vet the incoming peacekeeping troops, to make sure that they're not involved in any such problems in their home country.”
“And, of course, we will do that sort of vetting for Sri Lankan troops as we do for any other country,” he reportedly added.
It remains unclear exactly what will be included in the vetting process.
The UN Under Secretary General for Political Affairs, Jeffrey Feltman, who is currently visiting the island, will raise allegations against the Sri Lankan troops with the Sri Lankan government.
