Nainativu residents protest against Sri Lankan police bias following worker dispute

Residents of Nainativu staged a protest in Iranguthurai, accusing the Sri Lankan police of bias after eight workers were arrested following a dispute at the jetty.

The incident began two days ago, when a dispute broke out between labourers involved in loading operations and a contractor at the Nainativu jetty. The disagreement escalated into a physical confrontation. In the aftermath of the clash, tensions persisted between the two parties.

However, following complaints lodged by both parties at the local police station, the matter between the parties was reportedly solved.

Despite the resolution, local police subsequently arrested eight individuals connected to the group of labourers.

In response, a protest broke out in Iranguthurai, where residents accused the police of acting with clear bias against the workers. Demonstrators demanded justice and called for a transparent investigation into the incident.

The protest is the latest in a series of actions across the Tamil North-East highlighting alleged discriminatory treatment by Sri Lankan law enforcement agencies, which have long faced accusations of partiality and abuse in Tamil-majority areas.
