
Maaveerar Naal - or Great Heroes' Day - was commemorated by Tamils in Palermo, Italy, in honour of the fighters who sacrificed their lives in the armed struggle for liberation.
The remembrance ceremony began with the lighting of lamps, the hoisting of the Tamil Eelam national flag and the Italian national flag. A flower garland was placed over a picture of Lt. Shankar, the first cadre to die in combat.
Attendees gathered to pay tribute to the fallen heroes by laying flowers in front of their pictures. Members of Palermo City Council were also in attendance to pay their respects.


Additionally, the Tamil Eelam National Heroes’ Memorial Speech Competition was held as a part of the remembrance event, where students presented speeches and prizes were awarded to the winners. Students also performed dances to honor the memory of the fallen heroes.
