Maaveerar Naal marked in Denmark

Denmark maveerar dayMaaveerar Naal was commemorated in Herning and Kolbaek, Denmark last week.

Tamils in Denmark joined the Tamil nation in commemorating Maaveerar Naal 2025. 

Herning 

The event commenced with the lighting of the common flame, followed by the hoisting of the Tamil Eelam national flag. The 2008 Maaveerar Day address of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) leader Velupillai Prabhakaran was then screened, after which the International Coordination Centre’s official policy statement for Maaveerar Day 2025 was broadcast.

At 6:05 p.m. homeland time, the bell was sounded and a moment of silence was observed. The sister of Second Lieutenant Santhamalar, who attained martyrdom in the successful Anaiyiravu Operation of 2000, lit the main flame. 

The event also featured addresses by members of the Danish Parliament and City Council, as well as speeches by the coordinator of the Danish Tamil Organisations’ Union and the Deputy Head of the International Tamil Youth Organisation.

The teachers of the Malathi Tamil Arts Academy presented a poetic recital titled “The Graves Speak”. Uplifting dance performances were staged by teachers and students of the Danish Dance Academy and by students of the Malathi Tamil Arts Academy.

A drama titled “Daughter of Our Valour,” depicting the life and heroic history of Tamil Eelam’s first woman martyr, Second Lieutenant Malathi, was also presented by the Danish Institution for Art and Culture.

A special volume titled “Tamil Eelam National Maaveerar Archive – Volume 3”, compiled by the Publication Division of the International Coordination Centre and containing details of martyrs who laid down their lives in the homeland liberation war between 01 January 1999 and 31 December 2004, was released at the event.

Kolbaek 

A similar commemoration was held in Kolbaek, Denmark to mark the day. The memorial lamp was lit and then flowers were laid by portraits of fallen Tamil fighters. 

The song 'Nampungal Tamil Eelam Naalai Pirakkum' - believe it, Tamil Eelam will be born - was played to conclude the event.
