India extends financial assistance for ferry service to Tamil Eelam

The Indian government has announced the extension of its financial assistance for another year to support the passenger ferry service between Kankesanthurai in Tamil Eelam and Nagapattinam in Tamil Nadu.

This move, in line with India’s ongoing efforts is meant to bolster regional connectivity and people-to-people ties, will continue under the Viability Gap Funding mechanism.

Over Rs. 300 million have been earmarked annually to ensure the ferry service remains operational and affordable according to the Indian press. The funding is aimed at covering critical logistical and operational costs, maintaining uninterrupted service for passengers.

Since its relaunch in August 2024, the ferry has been used by more than 15,000 passengers. The service, which initially began in October 2023, had been temporarily suspended on 18th November 2024, causing disruption to travel and trade between the two Tamil-speaking regions. Its resumption is now viewed as a key development in restoring maritime connectivity between Tamil Nadu and Tamil Eelam.

The ferry route has historical resonance, particularly in reference to the Rameswaram-Talaimannar connection, which functioned as a vital maritime link until the early 1980s when it was disrupted by the rise of Sri Lanka’s armed conflict and the Tamil armed liberation struggle.

This new service is seen as a revival of that once-thriving trade and cultural relationship.
