Grassroots solidarity as Mannar communities organise food relief amid disaster

Tamil communities across Mannar have mobilised grassroots relief efforts as families displaced by Cyclone Ditwah continue to struggle with shortages of food and basic necessities.

Large parts of the island were devastated by severe flooding and landslides triggered by the cyclone, which swept across the island between 27 and 30 November. Mannar district was among the worst affected, with many families forced into temporary relief centres after losing access to homes, livelihoods and essential services.

Amid the crisis, residents of Vankalai stepped forward to support displaced families across the district. On 4 December, the people of Vankalai organised a community-led humanitarian initiative to provide cooked meals to families housed in temporary shelters. More than 450 food packs, collected from households in the village, were distributed to those affected.

Relief efforts continued on Sunday 7 December, when volunteers once again gathered at the Vankalai church to prepare additional meals using donated supplies. The cooked food was then delivered to several relief camps across the district.

Distributions reached families in Nanattan, Maavilanguni, Madukkarai, Karkidarndakulam, Kattaiyadamban and Madu, areas that have faced heavy disruption since the cyclone.
Community members said the initiative was driven by solidarity and compassion for those suffering in their district, as many families continue to endure displacement with limited access to essential support.

The community-led response comes amid widespread criticism of the state’s delayed and uneven disaster response across the Tamil homeland.
