Black flag protest in Mannar for Sri Lanka's Independence Day

Tamils in Mannar held a black flag protest earlier today to mark Sri Lanka's 75th Independence Day, which is deemed a 'black day' for the Tamil nation.

For decades, Tamils have rejected Sri Lanka's Independence Day as they continue to be oppressed by the state and denied basic rights.

Similar protests condemning Independence Day celebrations took place across the North-East today.

A rally started in Jaffna this morning and will reach Batticaloa on February 7, with protesters reaffirming calls for the Tamil right to self-determination.
