A senior United States envoy has held high-level talks in Sri Lanka, with a focus on expanding trade, investment and strategic cooperation in key sectors including ports, energy and aviation.
According to a statement shared by the US Embassy in Sri Lanka, Special Envoy for South and Central Asia Sergio Gor met with Sri Lanka’s president Anura Kumara Dissanayake as part of a regional visit aimed at strengthening ties in the Indian Ocean.
“Special Envoy Sergio Gor met with President Dissanayake and discussed deepening our trade relationship through U.S. business investments, commercial deals, and the expansion of Sri Lanka’s ports sector,” said a tweet.
The embassy added that the United States sees significant economic potential in Sri Lanka across several sectors.
“Sri Lanka offers significant untapped opportunities for the U.S. private sector in Sri Lanka, including in the ports, energy, aviation, and digital sectors. Special Envoy Gor met with key economic leaders to explore how to unlock the full potential of our economic partnership and business ties.”
Gor’s visit to Sri Lanka, which runs from March 19 to 24, forms part of a wider tour that also includes the Maldives. The trip is focused on advancing cooperation in the Indian Ocean region, an area of growing geopolitical importance.
During his time in Sri Lanka, the envoy is expected to meet senior government officials to “reaffirm bilateral relations and expand cooperation in strategic sectors”. The visit also aligns with broader US efforts to strengthen its presence in the Indo-Pacific.
According to the US, these engagements are intended to support efforts to safeguard key maritime routes and enhance infrastructure.
“Special Envoy Gor’s meetings will further support U.S. efforts to safeguard vital sea lanes and secure ports, reinforce mutually beneficial trade and commercial ties, and advance a free, open, and prosperous Indo-Pacific for the benefit of both our peoples,” said Washington.
