The Chemmani mass graves have been tied to allegations of extrajudicial killings carried out by the Sri Lankan military, particularly in the mid-1990s during the army's occupation of Jaffna.

Since the excavations began in May 2025, Tamil activists, families of the disappeared and politicians have been calling for accountability and international oversight and monitoring over the excavation process.
