Maaveerar Naal commemorated in Amparai at destroyed LTTE cemetery

Maaveerar Naal commemorations took place in Amparai's Kanchikudiyaaru Thuyilum Illam, which locals had cleared despite torrential rains.

The commemoration event took place despite intense surveillance by Sri Lankan police. Police officers recorded the number plates of the vehicles arriving at the cemetery before they were allowed access.

The thuyilum illam, or resting place, is a cemetery that housed the bodies of thousands of LTTE fighters. Kanchikudiyaaru Thuyilum Illam is the only LTTE cemetery in Amparai.

It was destroyed by the Sri Lankan state, but across the North-East these cemeteries have been cleared over recent weeks in preparation for the commemoration today.
