China has distributed emergency relief supplies to flood-affected families in Jaffna, Mannar, and Mullaitivu districts under its Brotherhood Assistance programme, providing aid to hundreds of Tamil families impacted by recent severe flooding.
On 10 February, a relief distribution event was held at the Jaffna District Secretariat’s conference hall, where Deputy Chief of the Chinese Embassy in Sri Lanka, Zhu Yanwei, personally distributed aid to affected families. A total of 1,070 families received relief packages valued at 6,490 Sri Lankan rupees each.
The event was attended by Jaffna District Secretary Pradeepan, senior officials from the Chinese Embassy, divisional secretaries, and other local government officials.
On the same day, additional relief efforts took place in Mannar, where aid was distributed at the Thullu Tamil Roman Catholic School in the Mannar Divisional Secretariat area. The distribution targeted families who had been severely impacted by the floods and had sought temporary shelter in Kattukaran and Thullu settlements.
At this event, 350 families received dry ration packages, with each package also valued at 6,490 Sri Lankan rupees. Chinese Embassy officials, along with Mannar District Secretary K. Kanageswaran and Mannar Divisional Secretary M. Pradeep, were present during the relief efforts.
Flood-affected families in Mullaitivu also received support under the Brotherhood Assistance programme on 9 February. The event, led by Mullaitivu District Government Agent A. Umamaheswaran, took place at the Bandaranaike Conference Hall at the Mullaitivu District Secretariat.
Deputy Chief of the Chinese Embassy, Zhu Yanwei, served as the Chief Guest, personally overseeing the distribution of dry ration packages to families. In total, 350 families in Mullaitivu were selected to receive aid, with the first phase providing packages to 100 families in the Karaithuraipattru Pradeshiya Sabha area. The remaining 250 packages will be distributed to other flood-affected communities in the district in subsequent phases.
