Poopathy Kanapathipillai, fondly known as Annai Poopathy, was a prominent activist of the Navatkerny Mother's Front. She began her hunger strike on March 19, 1988, in front of the Mamangeswarar Temple in Batticaloa town.
Her protest advanced two key demands: that the Indian government immediately enforce a ceasefire and for the IPKF to have peace talks with the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE).
Annai Poopathy died on April 19 1988, a month after she began her protest.
