Day 1

On Friday, Puthukudiyirippu families began a sit-in protest outside the Divisional Secretariat office. The protestors demanded the return of 19 acres of land owned by 49 Tamil families. The area is currently being used as an Sri Lankan army camp by the 682 brigade.

An 83-year-old woman at the protest told TG that when her husband died in December 2014, her family could not even access their home for the funeral. The famies were harrassed by Sri Lankan police attempting to break up the protest.

Day 2

Puthukudiyirippu families continued their protest on Saturday, wearing black scarves to protest Sri Lankan Independence Day. Celebrations for the day were held by the government and military in Mullaitivu town.
