Buddhist monk remanded over alleged abuse of minor in Navatkuli

A Buddhist monk attached to the Navatkuli temple in Jaffna has been arrested on charges of sexually abusing a minor and has been remanded in custody under a court order.

The incident is reported to have occurred on Saturday when a young girl residing near the Navatkuli temple visited the premises to obtain filtered drinking water. During this time, the newly arrived novice monk at the temple is alleged to have subjected the child to abuse.

The victim informed her mother of the incident, who lodged a complaint at the Chavakachcheri Police Station, following which Chavakachcheri police initiated investigations and arrested the monk. He was produced on Sunday before the Magistrate in Chavakachcheri, where the court ordered that he be remanded in custody until April 2nd.
