
Eelam Tamils held commemorative events in the North-East to mourn the victims of the 2004 Boxing Day tsunami.
On December 26th, 2004, over 35,000 people perished during the catastrophic tsunami that hit the coasts of the North-East and South of the island of Sri Lanka.
The United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) said five days after the disaster that almost two thirds of those killed across the island were in the Tamil homeland of the North-East.

Jaffna
The victims of the tsunami were remembered at a memorial in Uduthurai, Jaffna where families laid offerings of flowers and food for those who perished in the disaster.





Mannar
The Lighthouse Arts and Literature Charitable Foundation held a remembrance event by Mannar bridge to commemorate the tsunami victims.
Mannar's district council also commemorated the victims of the tsunami by lighting candles at their office.
