Australian Greens Senator David Shoebridge delivered a statement in the Australian Senate on 25 November marking Maaveerar Naal - or Great Heroes' Day - describing it as “one of the most significant events in the Tamil calendar” and honouring those who gave their lives in the struggle for dignity, justice and human rights.
In his remarks, Shoebridge noted the collective power of Tamils around the world pausing at exactly 5.45 p.m. to remember the fallen, calling it “a powerful expression of unity”. He added that his thoughts, and those of the Australian Greens, are with the Tamil community “across Australia and around the world” as they commemorate the solemn occasion.
“I say these words now in the Australian Senate, ensuring that this Tamil day of remembrance is acknowledged in our nation's parliament,” he said, directly addressing Tamils across New South Wales and the rest of Australia.
“To the New South Wales and Australian Tamil community who have gathered together today, we acknowledge the sacrifice. We will speak honestly about the past and commit to work together in peace and solidarity.”
