Tamil Eelam flag raised in Brampton as city honours Eelam Tamil identity

The City of Brampton marked Tamil Eelam National Flag Day on 21 November with a community flag-raising ceremony at Ken Whillans Square, recognising “the collective identity of the Eelam Tamil nation” and its “ongoing resistance to genocide”.

Dozens gathered for the event, reflecting the city’s long-standing relationship with its large Tamil diaspora. The ceremony saw the Tamil Eelam national flag raised outside Brampton City Hall, where participants observed a moment of reflection for those killed in the Tamil nation’s struggle for self-determination.

The City of Brampton also released a declaration, formally recognising 21 November as Tamil Eelam National Flag Day.

Brampton Mayor Patrick Brown reiterated the city’s support in a public post acknowledging the ceremony. “This morning, a community flag raising was held in Ken Whillans Square to recognise Tamil Eelam National Flag Day,” he said.

“The City of Brampton recognises November 21 as Tamil Eelam National Flag Day, honouring the collective identity of Eelam Tamils and their ongoing resistance to genocide. We join Brampton’s Tamil community in recognising this day and celebrating the many contributions of Tamil residents across our city.”
