Local residents and family members of fallen Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) have begun clearing a LTTE cemetery in Alampil, Mullaitivu, ahead of Maaveerar Naal - also known as Great Heroes' Day.
A flame was lit and floral tributes were offered to remember the LTTE cadres who gave their lives in the Tamil liberation struggle before the clearing work began.

LTTE cemeteries, also referred to as Thuyilum Illams, were destroyed by Sri Lanka after the end of the armed conflict. The graves of Tamil fighters were bulldozed by the state with Sri Lankan army bases built over them in some places.
The organising committee has called upon the residents of neighbouring villages, along with the parents and next of kin of the fallen cadres to participate in and support the ongoing voluntary effort.
They also urged all relatives to take part in the upcoming Maaveerar Naal remembrance ceremonies.
