Mannar environmental protection protest enters 17th day

The continuous satyagraha campaign in Mannar, opposing the erection of wind power towers and mineral sand mining projects, entered its seventeenth day today, with the protest being carried out in a rotational manner.

People from several villages, together with fishermen, joined the agitation today, lending their support to the movement spearheaded by the people and youth of Mannar.

Residents of Panangkattikottu, Jim Brown Nagar, Emil Nagar, Iththikandal, and Thalaimannar, along with fishing communities, rallied in solidarity, strengthening the campaign that has become a unifying call for Mannar’s people.

The demonstration took place around the central areas of Mannar town, where participants carried placards inscribed with slogans and raised their voices in protest.

The protesters declared that their demonstration would continue until the plans for the construction of wind power towers and the excavation of mineral sands are entirely abandoned.

Sri Lankan president Anura Kumara Dissanayake has agreed to suspend construction of two wind power plans for a month, but protests have continued demanding a permanent solution.
