IndiGo is now the largest foreign airline in Sri Lanka, currently operating 54 weekly flights connecting Bangalore, Chennai, Hyderabad and Mumbai, with cities such as Colombo and Jaffna.
This is part of the initiative to grow bilateral ties aiming to “stimulate tourism and faster economic growth” according to Vinay Malhotra, Head of Global Sales at IndiGo.
"As the leading international carrier operating from Sri Lanka, with connections to four Indian cities, we are proud to mark this milestone, which underscores our commitment to strengthening India-Sri Lanka bilateral relations," added Malhotra.
The Chairman of Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau stated, “IndiGo’s increased frequency, including its operations to Jaffna, highlights its dedication to the development of the Northern Province, fostering economic growth, tourism, and cultural exchange.”
IndiGo is the second Indian airline to fly from Chennai to Jaffna in September 2024. The flight, connecting Tamil Nadu and Tamil Eelam, takes just 75 minutes between the two cities. Jaffna is “a destination that boasts a rich history and cultural significance," said IndiGo, praising its "vibrant Tamil heritage".
