Vavuniya students suffering as buses refuse to take them to school

Tamil school students in Vavuniya staged a protest demanding local buses stop and pick them up to and from school this week, as the troubled public transport system is impacting on their education.

A protest was carried out in Kollar Puliankulam area, along the main A9 road at 7 am.

Relatives of the school students spoke of how their children were forced to leave home at 6AM to make the journey to school by foot. Despite waiting for hours at the bus stop, some buses refuse to stop and pick them up, they added, leaving many having to walk back home.

The protestors added that their children’s’ education was not being impacted and they demanded the authorities take action.

A Sri Lankan police representative came to the protest and assured them that the issues would be raised with bus drivers in the region.
