Sri Lankan security forces open fire before protesters storm president’s house

Footage has emerged of Sri Lankan security forces opening fire yesterday as demonstrators storm the president’s house, with bullets ricocheting off walls just inches away from protestors.

The footage follows repeat calls from the US and UN for security forces to restrain from excessive violence. At least 30 people were injured during the demonstrations and 2 were shot and hospitalised. Women were also reportedly beaten by Sri Lankan forces.

The outbreak of violence in Colombo saw the storming of Temple Trees, the President’s House, the Secretariat, and the burning of the Prime Minister’s residence.
