5 years and still no answers – Tamil families of disappeared march despite rains

Tamil families of the disappeared marched through Kilinochchi earlier today, as they marked 5 years of continuous protest demanding answers to the whereabouts of their loved ones even whilst heavy rains hit the town.

Despite the downpours, the families marched along the A9 road calling for an international justice and accountability mechanism to hold those responsible for the forced disappearances of their loved ones accountable.

The protesting families, largely made up of Tamil women, held umbrellas or plastic bags over their heads, alongside photographs of the disappeared loved ones.

It has been 5 years – 1,825 days – since they launched their continuous protest for justice.

Since the protests were launched across the streets of the North-East, several of the family members have passed away.

To date, no one has been held accountable and the fate of the disappeared still remains unknown.
