The Sri Lankan army continued with its militarisation of the North-East as fully uniformed soldiers in camouflage gear, attended a Hindu ceremony at a temple in Mullaitivu on Thursday.
Brigadier Keerthi Costa, the Brigadier General Staff at the Sri Lankan military headquarters in Mullaitivu attended the event, where troops reportedly took part in the ceremonies.
The event is the latest such incursion into civilian activities carried out by the military in the North-East, as Tamil calls for demilitarisation continue. Mullaitivu in particular has tens of thousands of Sri Lankan soldiers stationed in the region, with a study estimating as many as 1 soldier for every 2 civilians in the district alone.
