The Sri Lankan armed held a military demonstration for the visit of a senior commander to its Mullaitivu base last week, in signs that militarisation of the region looks set to continue.
Major General Dushyantha Rajaguru, commander of the security forces in Mullaitivu visited the base, where he gave an address to troops.
A demonstration was also put on for the commander, with masked and camouflaged troops carrying out a series of mock raids.
The move comes despite continued calls to demilitarise the region, where tens of thousands of troops remain stationed, almost a decade after the end of the armed conflict. Mullaitivu remains one of the most heavily militarised districts in the Tamil homeland, with a study finding that there was as many as 1 soldier for every two civilians stationed in the region.
