Buddhist monks oppose no confidence motion in Sri Lanka’s justice minister

Sinhala Buddhist monks from the Asigiri Sangha Sabawa have opposed reported moves to bring about a no confidence motion against Sri Lanka’s justice minister Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe.

The Asgiriya Maha Lekakhadikari, Medagama Dhammananda, said the Asigiri Sangha was “opposed to any move by some politicians to bring a no-faith motion against a minister actively engaged in Buddhist activities,” reports the Daily Mirror.

He went on to praise Mr Rajapakshe, who is also the minister for Buddhist affairs, stating he has “done a great service to the Buddha Sasana organising the World Buddhist Congress” and had deferred the honorary title of “Dharma Neethi Visarada” on him.

His statement comes as the United National Party's Working Committee adopted a no confidence motion against the minister at a meeting held on Friday.
