The Liberal Party of Canada claimed victory in the country’s elections on Monday evening, ending almost a decade of Conservative party rule.
The party managed to form a majority government having won 184 seats, having started the campaign in third place.
Canada's Prime Minister-elect Justin Trudeau said the country’s citizens have chosen ”a government that believes deeply in the diversity of this country”. “We believe in our hearts that this country’s unique diversity is a blessing bestowed upon us by previous generations of Canadians,” he said in his acceptance speech on Monday night.
Amongst those elected as members of parliament on Monday was Gary Anandasangaree, a Tamil Canadian human rights advocate.
