Bomb blast in Bangkok kills at least 19

At least 19 people have been killed and more than 100 injured after a bomb blast at a shrine in Thailand’s capital Bangkok.

The explosion, which occurred at 19:00 local time, targeted the Erawan Shrine, a major tourist attraction in the city. No one has claimed responsibility for the attack as of yet. National police chief Somyot Poompanmuang told reporters that “a pipe bomb” was used.

So far the police stated 10 Thai citizens have been confirmed dead, along with one Chinese citizen and one Filipino citizen. The death toll is expected to rise.

Thailand’s Defence Minister Prawit Wongsuwon said the attack had "targeted foreigners... to damage tourism and the economy". "We will hunt them down," he said.

Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha also said the government is setting up a "war room" in order to formulate a response.
