Tamil protesters in Jaffna burnt an effigy of the TNA MP M A Sumanthiran on Saturday, accusing him of helping the new Sri Lankan government to seek a deferral of the report looking into allegations of mass atrocities against the Tamil people during the final stages of the armed conflict.

Protesters had finished a rally calling for justice for those disappeared by the Sri Lankan state and for those still in custody without charge to be released, when an effigy of Mr Sumanthiran, who visited Geneva earlier this month to meet with the OHCHR investigative team, was lit.

Speaking to reporters this week however, Mr Sumanthiran said the TNA had campaigned for the report to be released next month as it was mandated to do so by the UN Human Rights Council.
Sri Lanka's foreign minister, Mangala Samaraweera also visited Geneva last month, urging the UN High Commissioner of Human Rights to delay the publishing of the report by six months.
On Monday the UN Human Rights Council decided to give Sri Lanka six months to cooperate with the UN inquiry and publish the report in September, as the council's 30th session.
